Tips for Maintaining Houseplants in the City

Houseplants always have a way of making a home feel brighter and more welcoming. Unfortunately, keeping them happy is not always an easy task (especially if you live in the city!). We have become experts at incorporating houseplants into home decor and maintaining them so they don’t wither. Here are a few of our tips to keep your houseplants alive and well.

  • Choose wisely. When shopping around for the perfect houseplants to spruce up your home, choose wisely! Stay away from plants that are home to exotic environments such as jungles or tropics. Instead, consider spider plants or bamboo. If sunlight is hard to come by in your city home, spider plants thrive on low light and bamboo grows in the shade.
  • Beware of drowning. When maintaining houseplants, more water is not always the solution. It is possible to overwater and therefore kill your houseplants. We recommend cacti or aloe plants. Cacti need to be watered once a week at the most, and aloe plants only need water about once every three weeks. If you stick your finger in the soil of your houseplants and it is damp, no need to water. (They also make great tools to measure the dampness of the soil!)
  • Location, location, location! It’s important to know if your houseplants need sunlight to grow, thrive in low lighting, or even grow in the shade. For the majority of plants, the window sill is the best spot for them. Depending on the positioning of your home with the sun, keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t dry out.
  • Monitor temperature. As the winter weather approaches it is common to turn the heat up in your home. The air inside your home can become very dry and cause harm to your plants.
