A Simplified Guide to Shellfishing on Cape Cod

Looking for a family-friendly activity on Cape Cod that’s fun, educational, and delicious? Shellfishing or clamming is a great way to experience the bounty and beauty of the Cape while creating unforgettable memories with family. Harvest and cook quahogs, oysters, clams, and blue mussels, and leave the errands to us!

Step 1: Get the Gear

You’ll need a rake, wire basket, shellfish gauge, and permit. In the summer months, you may need a cooler and some ice to hold your catch immediately after harvest, and in the winter months, you may consider gloves and hip waders to keep you warm. To prepare oysters and clams, you’ll need an appropriate knife and glove for shucking. You can find these items at any bait and tackle shop on Cape Cod (or shop local online at The Goose Hummock Shop).

Step 2: Get Your License

Town-specific permits are required for recreational shellfishing and are available for purchase at the local Beach Sticker Office, Town Hall, or police department (check your town’s website for more details on where, when, what, and how much you can harvest!). Annual and weekly permits are available for residents and non-residents.

Step 3: Get Dirty

The best time to go digging starts an hour before low tide, so be sure to check the tide charts. Rake the area where you see little holes in the sand (note you may need to dig a foot down to find the shellfish). If shellfish are gaping open and do not respond to touch, they are probably dead and should be discarded.

Step 4: Get Cooking!

Store your harvest in the refrigerator and consume it within 24-48 hours. Shellfish should be rinsed or scrubbed to remove dirt or shell debris, then shucked where appropriate. With seafood this fresh, keep it simple with these devastatingly delicious recipes:
